Worshiping Together

Weekly Service Time:  Sunday, 9:30am – 10:45am

Special evening services most often begin at 7:30pm
These may include Ash Wednesday, Maundy Thursday, and Good Friday. Christmas Eve services typically begin at 6pm and 8pm.

Lectionary

A lectionary is an organized method of reading and reflecting on the Bible. The lectionaries used by UPC are the same as those employed by many other church denominations. It includes a three year lectionary for weekly worship, and a daily lectionary for personal meditation and prayer. Though the lectionary is most often used each week in worship there are times when we depart from this practice.

Blended Worship

Worship at UPC makes use of a variety of blended worship elements, built on a traditional Reformed worship format. On any given Sunday many different styles of music may be employed -- traditional hymns, praise music, spirituals, music of Taize, Iona, and the global church. Children are welcome and given a role. Youth along with adult men and women serve as lay leaders. The diversity of the body of Christ is affirmed in that the elements of the service do not exclusively support the needs of some members at the expense of others.

Sacraments

UPC regularly celebrates the sacraments of baptism and the Lord’s Supper (Eucharist). These are symbolic acts engaged by the whole congregation through which we hear God’s promise to us, are nurtured by the Spirit, are bound together in Christian love, and make public our commitment to serve Christ and walk the way of Jesus.

Baptism is the sign of our initiation into the community of Jesus Christ. Parents may bring their infant children for baptism as long as one parent is an active member of the church. Baptism is a requirement of youth and adults seeking membership in the church and who have not been baptized.

The Lord’s Supper / Holy Communion / Eucharist is the sign of God’s continual nurture of our lives in Jesus Christ. It is celebrated more than twenty times during the year. We come to the Table each week from Easter through Pentecost. Communion is taken to our homebound members and those in the hospital at their request.

Some Sundays we come forward to receive the elements at stations near the Table in the front of the sanctuary. O other Sundays the elements are served by elders to the congregation seated in the pews.
